WASHINGTON, May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Thycotic, a provider of privileged account management (PAM) solutions for more than 7,500 organizations worldwide, today announced its Browser Stored Password Discovery Tool – a free tool that detects and informs IT professionals if passwords are being stored within popular browsers. Using this tool, IT and security professionals will be alerted with a report of passwords being stored in a browser and by identifying these risks, enhance the security within their organization in response to employees clicking “remember password” on browsers.
“Several organizations don’t take this step in preventing browsers from storing passwords, which is a direct violation of SANS password protection policies,” said RJ Gazarek, Product Marketing Manager at Thycotic. “The Browser Stored Password Discovery Tool allows IT admins to close security holes in their organization, check security policy compliance and dictate guidelines for storing passwords in the workplace. The versatility of this password tool will tighten up the risk and security for any organization.”
The real danger of browser stored passwords occurs when a privileged account is stored in the browser. SANS’ Password Protection Policy advises employees to never hit “remember password” while on applications or browsers to protect their digital identity and prevent cyberattacks in the workplace. This free Windows Tool uses Active Directory to scan local Windows machines for passwords stored in Chrome and Firefox browsers. The information collected can be saved as both a CSV or a PDF file and users can download the tool once and have it for a lifetime. The report includes information such as the number of passwords each user has stored and the top sites that have stored passwords on local machines; easily see if salesforce.com or online banking passwords are being stored in user browsers.
